Alexios Angelos Komnenos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alexios Angelos Komnenos was a Byzantine prince of the 12th century, grandson of Emperor Alexios I from the Komnenen dynasty . His parents were Konstantin Angelos and Theodora Komnene. He had three brothers, John , Andronikos and Isaac. Since his father did not come from the higher nobility, he is usually only mentioned by his mother's name as Alexios Komnenos.

The foundation of many churches is ascribed to Alexios Angelos Komnenos, among others that of the Church of St. Panteleimon in Nerezi in Macedonia . There you can read the following inscription in Greek above the main portal:

The Church of the Holy and Famous Martyr Pantaleon was beautifully erected with the help of Prince Alexios Komnenos, son of the purple-born Theodora, in the ninth month on the 13th day 1164.
