With his debut novel L'Art français de la guerre , he won the Prix Goncourt , the most important literary prize in France, in 2011 . The Prix Goncourt, awarded since 1903, is only endowed with a symbolic ten euros, but it catapults the authors into the bestseller lists for weeks.

In response to the award, Alexis Jenni said: “Since I finished my studies 20 years ago, I have written various texts, all of which were unsuccessful. I thought I would always remain a Sunday writer like there are Sunday painters. I wrote the book for five years. "

The novel deals with the colonial history of France in Indochina and Algeria ; an asymmetrical warfare can be seen in both . Behind this is an analysis of present-day France, which investigates the hypothesis that the way in which French society and the Front National in particular treat immigrants today have their roots in the colonial wars, when a policy of strength was practiced.

L'Art français de la guerre was also nominated for the Prix Médicis and the Prix Femina .
