Alfaia

The Alfaia is a light wooden bass drum that is used in Brazilian music , especially in maracatu . Their origin goes back to the time of the colonization of South America by Spain and Portugal. It comes from the bass drum of European marching music . Originally, the body was made from a hollowed-out tree trunk, mostly Macaiba- Palm wood, made. Today, laminated plywood is usually used. The Alfaia is covered with untanned goatskin and is tuned by the tension of the ropes. It is played in three different pitches. The mallet of the right hand is significantly thicker and heavier than that of the left. The drum is played by the standing musician with a rope or belt hanging around his right shoulder.
