The Alfred Teves School was a primary and secondary school named after Alfred Teves in eastern Lower Saxony and was sponsored by the city of Gifhorn .

The Alfred Teves School has been closed since June 2010.

historical development

With the settlement of the Teves factory in the Gifhorn Südstadt in 1951, many people from the eastern regions poured into the Gifhorn- Wolfsburg area in the post-war years . On September 1, 1952, school district VI (today's Steinschule) was divided into a north and a south of the railway line, and elementary school II was founded. Since a school building was not yet available, the 627 pupils of elementary school II initially had to spend two years in the red barracks, the former AD camp ( Reich Labor Service ) on Braunschweiger Strasse, some of them also in the rooms of today's Freiherr-vom-Stein-Schule , be taught. The school was built in several construction phases with great support from the Teves company. On May 3, 1954 the inauguration of the VII or Primary School South, as it was also called, took place. In the school year 1955/56, 15 classes were taught in twelve rooms, six classes were housed in the "forest school" on what is now the Realschule grounds.

In 1958 the school was named after Alfred Teves. The Teveswerk, the establishment of which the first rector and later Gifhorn mayor Wilhelm Thomas helped to promote, donated 100,000 marks (around 240,000 euros) for a further expansion of the school.

In 2008, about 280 pupils were taught in primary and secondary schools at the Alfred Teves School.

Closure of the Alfred Teves School

The school was closed on August 1, 2010 due to a presumably falling number of students.

In the discussion about the closure of one of the three primary and secondary schools in Gifhorn, the Alfred Teves School was recently favored by the city council due to the better spatial conditions. Critics note that this is a decision based on purely commercial interests and that the good pedagogical work and the central position of the school in the catchment area of future primary school students from Gifhorn-Süd are ignored. In the long term, from the point of view of the critics, who follow the relevant current recommendations of the Lower Saxony Ministry of Culture, securing the school location and u. a. the associated teaching in classes with fewer students is the better solution. A final political decision to permanently close was made on July 2nd, 2007. With one vote against, the Gifhorn City Council decided to close the Alfred Teves School. Despite the falling number of pupils, three complete first classes started school in September 2007.

On November 15, 2009, the school committee of the city of Gifhorn voted unanimously for the Fritz-Reuter-Realschule to move to the building, which had been renovated up to that point, on August 1, 2011.
