Alfred Hückler (born April 25, 1931 in Berlin ) is a German industrial designer and design theorist . From 1970 to 1996 he taught design basics and theory at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art (KHB), of which he was rector from 1991 to 1996 after reunification.

biography

After graduating from high school, Alfred Hückler first studied precision engineering. He then designed and developed mechanical, optical and electronic devices in the industry for 18 years. In 1971/72 he passed the examination for the diploma in design at the Art Academy Berlin-Weißensee with Rudi Högner . Since the 1960s he has been dealing with geometric design topics such as shape development, stackability and design aesthetics. From 1970 until his retirement in 1996 he worked continuously as a university lecturer at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art.

In addition to teaching, he was and is a member of committees and organizations such as the central working group "Technische Formgestaltung" of the Chamber of Technology (KdT) in the GDR, juries of the Council for Design and Plagiarism and ICSID congresses in London, Moscow, Norway and Finland. He is also a founding and honorary member of the Mart-Stam Society and a member of the Deutscher Werkbund.

Main areas of activity

Alfred Hückler is one of the few designers and design theorists who deal particularly with the fundamentals of design work. This applies in particular to the aesthetic aspects of geometry as a mathematical discipline and questions of design theory in relation to social and use-related aspects. This also established the design geometry course he introduced in 1978 at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art. Both have shaped several generations of design graduates from the art college.

He received further teaching assignments from Oslo 1982–88, Prague 1989, Halle / S. and Potsdam 2000.

In addition to teaching, he wrote numerous papers and articles in specialist committees of the KDT, design magazines and specialist books.
