Ernst Jakob Wetzel

Ernst Jakob Wetzel (born January 25, 1887 in Alsheim ; † August 29, 1969 there ) was a German farmer , winery owner and politician ( DVP , later CDU ).

Life

Ernst Jakob Wetzel was born as the son of the winery owner Jean Wetzel. After attending primary school and graduating from high school in Worms , he worked in his parents' company. At the same time, he continued his education at the agricultural and viticulture school in Worms and Oppenheim . From 1909 to 1910 he did military service and from 1914 to 1918 he took part in the First World War as a soldier , most recently as a reserve officer. After the end of the war he worked again in his parents' winery, which he took over in 1920.

Wetzel joined the German People's Party (DVP) in 1918 and was elected to the state board of the DVP in the People's State of Hesse . He was mayor of the community of Alsheim since 1920 and since 1924 a member of the district council and the district committee of the district of Worms . He was also a member of the Provincial Parliament of the Province of Rheinhessen .

After the National Socialists came to power , Wetzel had to resign all local political mandates. In 1933 he was deposed as mayor of Alsheim and interned in the Osthofen concentration camp for eight months . In 1942 he joined the resistance group around Carl Friedrich Goerdeler , Wilhelm Leuschner and Erwin von Witzleben . In connection with the events surrounding the assassination attempt on July 20, 1944 , he fled to the Odenwald .

In April 1945 Wetzel was first appointed mayor of Alsheim by the Allied military government, and later elected mayor of the municipality. He held the mayor's office until 1953. He joined the CDU in 1946 and was chairman of the CDU district association in Worms. From 1947 he was President of the Rheinhessen Chamber of Agriculture .

Following the establishment of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate , Wetzel was elected to the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament in the first state election in 1947 via the constituency of Rheinhessen . He also entered parliament in the following state elections in 1951 , 1955 , 1959 and 1963 . He was a member of the state parliament for 20 years without interruption until 1967, in the last legislative period (1963–1967) as senior president . Twice, in 1949 and 1953 , he also ran for the German Bundestag , but missed entry into parliament.

honors and awards

Wetzel held the honorary title of economics councilor . In 1955 he was awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
