Algae house
Coordinates: 53 ° 29 '48.7 " N , 10 ° 0' 4.9" O The algae house (also called BIQ) a demonstration project of the International Building IBA Hamburg .
It is one of the so-called “Smart Material Houses”, which are intended to illustrate the possibilities of adaptable building constructions and intelligent building technology concepts in the context of the IBA using practical examples. In addition to the Algae House, the Soft House, the Woodcube and the “Smart is green” house are also among the IBA's Smart Material Houses.
The cubic, five-storey algae house is one of the passive houses and was designed according to a design by Splitterwerk Architekten from Graz. A special feature are the two differently designed south-west and south-east facades, in whose glass panels microalgae grow. These photobioreactors , which are integrated into a facade for the first time in the world, generate biomass through photosynthesis , which is intended to support the heating of the building, and also make a contribution to lighting control and shading the building. Due to the regular growth of the algae, the biomass is in constant motion and the facade changes its color.
