Ali mausoleum in Mazar

The 15th century Ali mausoleum in Mazar-e Sharif ( Balkh province ), also known as the Blue Mosque or Rauza , is considered (mainly by the Afghan population themselves) as the burial place of Ali ibn Abi Talib , the son-in-law of Muhammad and one of the most important personalities of Islam . Mazar-e Sharif is Persian and means "shrine of the noble". The imposing mausoleum of the saint is one of the most beautiful mosques in the world and is the most important pilgrimage site in Afghanistan.

It is highly controversial among historians whether Ali ibn Abi Talib, the first Imam of the Shiites , is actually buried in this area. In addition, there is a legend of saints from pre-Islamic times, because it is also assumed that this was originally the burial place of the ancient Persian prophet Zarathustra , who possibly lived and worked here. In contrast, the Imam Ali mosque in Najaf in Iraq is considered the burial place of Ali ibn Abi Talib.

location

Location of the mosque in the city

The Ali mausoleum is a central mosque in Mazar-e Sharif , from which the four most important access roads of the city lead to the suburbs. In the immediate vicinity there is a square ring road and, a little further away, an oval ring road around the mosque, which gives the city map of Mazar-e Sharif its characteristic appearance.
