AliExpress.com is an online retail platform that enables small businesses in China and other countries to sell products to online buyers internationally. The platform was founded in 2010 and is part of the Alibaba Group .

Business model

The business model is a drop shipment . It makes it easier for small businesses to sell to customers around the world, which explains and enables AliExpress' wide range. The platform is usually compared to eBay , as sellers are independent of the Alibaba company itself and use AliExpress as a platform to sell to private or business customers.

Sellers can be either companies or individuals. AliExpress differs from Amazon in that the company has no physical contact with the products, but only mediates them and offers the necessary platform. However, Amazon Marketplace corresponds to this concept.

The main difference to the Chinese online auction house Taobao from the Alibaba Group is that AliExpress is primarily geared towards international buyers. Alibaba is using AliExpress to expand its reach outside of Asia and challenge online giants like Amazon and eBay. AliExpress uses affiliate marketing to find new customers.

history

AliExpress started out in 2010 as a business-to-consumer buying and selling portal. Currently, AliExpress is available in English, Russian, Portuguese, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Turkish, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Arabic, Hebrew, and Polish. Customers outside the national borders for these languages will automatically be served the English version of the service.

AliExpress is the most visited ecommerce website in Russia and was the 10th most popular website in Brazil.

After AliExpress expanded its European business in the 2010s, AliExpress was the fourth largest online retailer in Switzerland in 2018, with sales of CHF 475 million.

On August 25, 2019, the first retail store called AliExpress Plaza opened in the Xanadú shopping center near Madrid .
