Allergan , Inc. was an international pharmaceutical company based in the United States and a predecessor of today's Allergan Plc .

The company was listed in the S&P 500 . Allergan was founded in 1950 and is headquartered in Irvine , California . Allergan's pharmaceutical products include Botox , Acular , Levobunolol , Alocril, Prevage, Avage, and Tazorac .

The neurological product botox in particular is very well known worldwide. Under the brand name Botox Cosmetic and Vistabel, the product is used in facial skin care for wrinkles.

In March 2006, Allergan acquired Inamed to form a world leader in facial and breast aesthetics. In April 2014 it was announced that Valeant wanted to take over Allergan. At the end of May 2014, Valeant increased its offer again. In 2015, Irish company Actavis took over the company and renamed itself Allergan .
