Alliance of Democrats (Lesotho)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Alliance of Democrats (AD; Sesotho : Pele-Feela ; German for example: "Alliance of Democrats" or "Just ahead!") Is a party in Lesotho . It was founded in 2016 as a spin-off from the Democratic Congress (DC) and is represented in the National Assembly . From 2017 to 2020 it was the second largest faction in the coalition under Thomas Thabane .

history

In November 2016, DC vice chairman Monyane Moleleki and the lirurubele wing led by him stood up against his party leader and prime minister Pakalitha Mosisisli and his coalition government, so that they withdrew their parliamentary majority. Moleleki was then expelled from the DC and founded the Alliance of Democrats, of which he became party leader. With the former prime minister and opposition leader Thomas "Tom" Thabane ( All Basotho Convention , ABC) and the chairmen of the other two opposition parties, he made a pact that should bring Moleleki the office of prime minister and Thabane that of the deputy.

As a result of the founding of the party and a further split at the Lesotho Congress for Democracy (LCD), the National Assembly was closed for an indefinite period. The AD was officially registered on January 13th. At the end of January 2017, she held rallies and presented her party symbols. The creation of jobs was named as an important part of the program. Unlike the leaders of the other three allied parties, Moleleki is calling for the 2016 Amnesty Bill , which provides amnesty for members of the security forces who perpetrated violence between 2007 and 2015, to apply. Parliament met again on February 24, 2017. 14 former DC MPs then switched to the opposition benches as the AD parliamentary group, nine other DC MPs also declared their loyalty to the AD, but could not change because they had received their mandate according to proportional representation via a party list and therefore formally to the Party membership were bound. On March 1st, Moleleki passed a vote of no confidence , which the opposition won by calling a vote ( viva voce ). As a result, Mosisili decided to hold new elections - otherwise Moleleki would have become prime minister.

In the elections in June 2017 , the AD received nine seats; Moleleki was able to defend the direct mandate he received as a DC member. The AD subsequently joined the ABC in a coalition government with two smaller parties. On May 19, 2020, Thabane was forced to resign by a new coalition excluding the AD, so that the AD left the government.
