The Almondell Bridge is a road bridge in the Scottish council area of West Lothian . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A. The bridge used to cross the border between West Lothian and Midlothian , but now lies entirely in West Lothian after the regional borders have been redesigned. The Almondell Aqueduct , which is also listed, spans the river around 500 m upstream .
description
The masonry viaduct is about two kilometers east of the city of Livingston . It was built around 1800 based on a design by Alexander Nasmyth and led an access road to the Almondell House, which had since been demolished, across the Almond . After the condition of the little-used bridge had deteriorated over the years, it was restored in 1998.
The Almondell Bridge spans the Almond in two uneven segment arches, a wide main arch and a much smaller arch on the north side. The segmental arches are walled with embossed wedge stones. The parapet along the road is designed with dummy reinforcement, with battlements and square pillars.
