Alpine is a free email program developed at the University of Washington .
Alpine 1.0 was released on December 20, 2007.
Alpine is a new version of the Pine messaging system, which has been expanded to include support for Unicode and other functions. Alpine is intended for inexperienced email users as well as demanding, experienced users. Alpine, like Pine previously, is being developed at the University of Washington. Alpine can be learned by trial and error and by using context-sensitive help. The user interface is customizable.
Licensing
Alpine is licensed under the Apache License , Version 2. On November 29, 2006, the first alpha version was released to the public, whereas Pine alpha tests were always non-public.
Functions
Alpine shares many features in common with console applications, such as a large number of keyboard shortcuts so that all navigation and operation can be done using the keyboard instead of the mouse. Indeed, all operations in Alpine have a corresponding keyboard shortcut.
In contrast to other console applications for developers and experienced users who frequently require editing the configuration file, Alpine provides most of the configuration options in the software. This makes Alpine one of the easiest to learn of the console-based email programs.
Alpine supports IMAP , POP , SMTP and LDAP natively. Although it does not support HTML in email, emails that contain only HTML can be viewed as text.
future
On August 4th, 2008, the Alpine team at the University of Washington announced that, following a further release, the Web-Alpine 2.0, they “want to shift their efforts from direct further development to advisory and coordination roles in order to integrate of community contributions ”.
re-alpine
A continuation is re-alpine . On August 20, 2011, re-alpine, the basis for further development of the alpine package, was integrated into Debian GNU / Linux . It was last updated in November 2016.
Alpine 2.10
On January 16, 2013, Eduardo Chappa, who has worked for many years on the Alpine project, released version 2.10 of Alpine. This release was announced in the comp.mail.pine newsgroup . Version 2.22 is now available.
