As a mountaineer against Italy is the debut novel by Gustav Renker , published in 1918 . In it he reports on his mountaineering experiences in the First World War . He contrasts the heroic mountain dweller with the “degenerate city dweller” and championed an ideal of masculinity that resembled Ernst Jünger's “renewal through war” .
