On May 1, 1683, King Christian V created an office of justice ( justervæsen ), headed by Ole Rømer . The cubit ( alen ) was fixed at 2 feet of the Rhine. Only later did Rømer discover that there were different definitions of the foot of the Rhine , which is why an iron prototype was made in Copenhagen in 1698 . The foot ( fod ) was determined in 1820 based on the period of oscillation of a pendulum and revised in 1835. The metric system was introduced in 1907.
At the end of the 17th century, Ole Rømer determined the mile based on the circumference of the earth and divided it into 12,000 alen . Prussia took over this as the Prussian mile in 1816 . The definition of 1835 was 7.532 km. Before that there were many variants, the most common being the Sjællandsk miil of 17600 fod or 11.130 km.
