Old Post Office (Eisenach)
The old post office is a listed building in Eisenach in Thuringia . It is considered to be one of the few remaining purely classical buildings in Eisenach.

The Alte Posthalterei is located on the property at Georgenstrasse 52 in the city center of Eisenach, opposite the Hellgrevenhof used as a city library and in the vicinity of the "Sonne" monument . In the immediate vicinity are the remains of the Eisenach city wall with the former location of the Georgentore, which, as the western city gate, bounded the old town of Eisenach to the west.

The building was erected in 1819 in the classicism style. The central part of the facade is dominated by the main entrance, which is framed by Doric columns. Inside there are stucco ceilings and a banister made of narrow wooden bars, which are crowned by palmettes.

In 1819 the post office keepers Jungherr and Pfennig had the house built right next to the Georgentor on the site of the former Hessenhof. The "Hessenhof" first belonged to the Hersfeld monastery , then to the Hessian landgraves. In 1908 the building became the property of the city of Eisenach, which housed a secondary school in it. The east wing of the building was shortened at this time in order to gain more traffic space towards Hospitalstrasse. Since the mid-1920s, the city's girls' vocational school was located in the building.
After the Second World War , parts of the municipal vocational school were housed in the old post office, from 1951 until 1981 it housed an auxiliary school. From 1981 on, the building was used, among other things, as office space for authorities, political parties and organizations as well as the Eisenach drawing school. In November 1995 the municipal children and youth center "Alte Posthalterei" was opened in the building.
In the autumn of 2014, the windows of the building were renewed in accordance with listed buildings, in 2015 the natural stone plinths and pillars were renovated and the facade was repaired.
