The Hellgrevenhof is a monument in the Wartburg town of Eisenach in Thuringia . In the west of the old town, directly at the former Georgentor, in the courtyard area of the houses at Georgenstrasse 43-47, there is the so-called bower of the Hellgrevenhof. Today the main building of the Eisenach city library is located in the building complex. During the last renovation of the building, in the mid-1990s, the building history was researched, so this stone building is probably the oldest preserved secular building within the Eisenach city wall . The monument ensemble also includes the Storchenturm , a former guard and prison tower of the Eisenach city fortifications.
history
The family Hellgrafe, Hellgrefe, or similar belong to the Eisenach councilor families, who are known by name in documents from the 13th century - "Höllengraf" - in legendary tradition this bourgeois sex is also found in the so-called war of singers : the Hungarian magician Klingsor and the minstrel Heinrich von Ofterdingen find their apartment in the Hellgrefe's house - located on the city wall at St. Georgentor, on the left hand side when you leave the city. At the end of the 17th century, the property was acquired by the court and assigned to the judiciary. In other parts, a brewery was set up, which was connected to the tavern and tavern “Zur Güldenen Sonne” opposite. Parts of the property, probably the judicial office, found new uses as pawn shops and pawn shops. After several changes of ownership, the complex quickly fell into disrepair in the 20th century, and in the 1920s there were even plans to build a first high-rise building here, which, however, met with broad rejection among the Eisenach population. A forge was last operated on the ground floor of the bower. The stone building survived several city fires and wars, today it forms the Hellgrevenhof with the neighboring half-timbered houses. In addition to the city library, a restaurant and office space, there is also the studio for the regional broadcaster " Wartburg-Radio 96.5 ".
Structural matters
The building history of the Hellgrevenhof bower was extensively examined in the course of the renovation and conversion work in the mid-1990s to become a library.
The bower at right angles to the city wall was located directly next to the Georgentor - the western entrance to the city. The oldest findings go back to the Romanesque period. The building is a massive stone construction with a few, also small, window openings, the main entrance was from the east via the inner courtyard with a fountain, another entrance was created in the former north facade. A staircase leads from the ground floor to the Romanesque cellar ( barrel vault 7.4 × 5.7 m) in the western half of the building, as well as another staircase to the upper floor. The so-called hall with an extremely valuable, decorative star vault from the 18th century is also located on the ground floor . On the 1st floor, secured remains of paint and plaster (decorative hunting scene) refer to the former room design and use as a ballroom.
The current use as part of the city library building averted further decay and the threatened total loss of the valuable building fabric.
The buildings on the street at Georgenstrasse 43-47 also had a diverse building history, which could be analyzed in essential parts. In the wagon passage from the first half of the 19th century, the preliminary investigations came across a site that is significant in terms of town history and town archeology - the well-preserved cesspool of the former Gasthof zur Güldenen Sonne with thousands of small finds.
