Pastoral care for the elderly

The nursing home chaplaincy is the special pastoral care in nursing homes. In Germany, this form of pastoral care is carried out by full-time pastors such as pastors , deacons , pastoral officers and parish officers, as well as by appropriately qualified nursing , mentoring or volunteer workers. Such a qualification can e.g. B. can be acquired through training to become a “pastoral companion”. Elderly home pastoral care is aimed at residents, relatives and employees of elderly care facilities.

Field of activity

The pastoral care of the elderly offers visits to residents, pastoral talks and support, e.g. B. after moving into a nursing home, on special occasions and in crisis situations. Regular church services can be offered in the facility and networking with the local church community can be established. Accompanying relatives, voluntary and full-time employees can also be part of the tasks, as well as providing support with ethical issues (e.g. living wills , artificial nutrition ). Furthermore, the Christian care for the dying and the anointing of the sick , in the Catholic Church the Holy Unction, belong to the tasks.

When caring for people with dementia , methods of validation are also used in pastoral care .

Legal framework, qualification

The term old people's home pastoral care is not a protected term and there are no legal framework conditions. Guidelines, implementation provisions and framework conditions developed by Caritas or Diakonie can serve as a basis.

Further training courses are offered in Germany by the regional churches and dioceses , Diakonie, Caritas and parishes .
