The old cemetery is a former cemetery in the city of Lucerne .

With the population growth at the beginning of the 19th century, space in the most important cemetery for over 200 years in the hall graves and in the open around the church ( St. Leodegar in the courtyard ) became increasingly scarce. After years of searching and negotiations, the construction of a replacement facility on the so-called Propstei-Matte to the north-east of the previous location was started in 1839.
The simple complex was divided into six fields by paths and surrounded by a wall. In 1861 a small Protestant cemetery was added to the south-east of the Catholic cemetery. However, on the one hand, the subsoil was poorly suited for burials and, on the other hand, the facility was soon too small again. With the opening of the cemetery in Friedental in 1885, the cemetery on the Propstei-Matte could already be closed again.
The area was increasingly planted with trees. The last graves were not cleared until 1927. The cemetery cross from 1849, two grave slabs for the two liberal politicians Jakob Robert Steiger and Kasimir Pfyffer, and an obelisk in memory of the victims of the march of March 31 / April 1, 1845, have survived.
In 1927 the cemetery was converted into a park, later supplemented with park benches and a children's playground. A garden architecture restoration took place in 2005/2006. Thanks to its old trees and its location a bit away from the crowds of tourists, the 9,910 m² urban green area is now a place of rest again.
