Old Jarrah Tree

Old Jarrah Tree

The Old Jarrah Tree is an exceptionally large and old Eucalyptus marginata (Jarrah) on the corner of Third Street and Church Avenue in Armadale , Western Australia . It is estimated to be 400 to 800 years old. Trees of this size are rare in and around the Perth metropolitan area because of the extensive deforestation of the area in the 19th century . The tree is in pretty bad shape: about three-quarters of its canopy is dead or lost and, as a result of pruning, is not even half its normal height. It was debarked by vandals in 1977 and responded by developing numerous epicormic buds on its north side. Despite these problems, it is considered to be in a stable condition.

Attempts to destroy the tree have been foiled twice by community groups, in 1987 and 1997. A protection ordinance for the tree was enacted in 1997 after the Minister of Cultural Heritage received 1,147 petitions asking for it to be saved. It is now part of the Bicentennial Heritage Tree Trail and is included in both the Heritage Council of Western Australia's Register of Heritage Sites and the National Trust of Australia's Tree Register . It is one of three trees in the Western Australias tree clusters to be included in the heritage.
