Spread of the Jarrah Forest

Occurrence

Eucalyptus marginata is widespread in southwestern Western Australia in areas with relatively even water supply and an annual rainfall of more than 600 mm. The Jarrah is found in an area of 100 km north of Perth to the south coast. Thanks to the extensive root system, the tree can also survive in a nutrient-poor environment.

Systematics

The first description of Eucalyptus marginata occurred in 1802 in James Edward Smith : Transactions of the Linnean Society of London , 6, p 302 Synonyms for Eucalyptus marginata Donn ex Sm. Are: Eucalyptus floribunda Hugel ex Endl. , Eucalyptus mahogani F.Muell. orth. var., Eucalyptus mahoganii F. Muell. , Eucalyptus hypoleuca showers .

Of Eucalyptus marginata . Donn ex Sm There are three subspecies:

  • Eucalyptus marginata subsp. elegantella Brooker & Hopper : It is based in Western Australia .
  • Eucalyptus marginata Donn ex Sm. Subsp. marginata : It is up to 40 m high and occurs in the South West Botanical Province: Avon Wheatbelt, Esperance Plains, Geraldton Sandplains, Jarrah Forest, Mallee, Swan Coastal Plain, Warren.
  • Eucalyptus marginata subsp. thalassica Brooker & Hopper : It is 5 to 25 m high and is found in the South West Botanical Province: Avon Wheatbelt, Jarrah Forest, Swan Coastal Plain.

Eucalyptus marginata forms hybrids with other Eucalyptus species :

  • Eucalyptus marginata × megacarpa : It is up to 8 m high and occurs in the South West Botanical Province: Jarrah Forest, Warren.
  • Eucalyptus marginata × pachyloma : It is 1.5 to 5 m high and occurs in the South West Botanical Province: Avon Wheatbelt, Esperance Plains, Jarrah Forest.
  • Eucalyptus buprestium × marginata : It is 1.5 to 5 m high and occurs in the South West Botanical Province: Esperance Plains.
  • Hybrids between Eucalyptus erectifolia and Eucalyptus marginata also appear sporadically .

use

Jarrah plays a role in honey extraction through the flowers, but the wood is mainly used. Jarrah is one of the most important hardwoods in Australia. The termite- resistant wood of the Jarrah tree is used for the construction of furniture, as parquet and for floors. It is used in shipbuilding, bridge building and mining. The wood is also used to make musical instruments.
