The Milchhof Arnstadt is a listed building in Arnstadt , which the architect Heinrich Martin Schwarz built from 1928 to 1929.

description

Arnstadt, old milk farm

The dairy farm comprised production rooms as well as common rooms, bedrooms and washrooms for the employees. Bricks were used on the facade for the construction, reinforced concrete for the staircases and floor slabs, steel for the windows, sliding doors and railings. Schwarz staggered the rooms into a cube with storage elements: flat roof, parapet , ribbon windows and brick friezes. Despite vandalism in recent years, the basic structure of the building and the original lettering on the facade have been preserved.

history

The Arnstadt dairy was opened on December 4, 1929 as a processing facility for a dairy cooperative of 80 farmers. A few years earlier, the architect Martin Schwarz had used historical style quotations, such as B. in the design of the synagogue in Arnstadt (1913). But in 1928 he adopted the clear design language of the Bauhaus for the Milchhof . This reflects the claim of the new industrial building to exude modernity. "When designing the exterior, the decisive factor was to create a simple, dignified building that serves the purpose and also expresses this architecturally." ( Martin Schwarz : Arnstädter Anzeiger ) During GDR times, the Milchhof was rebuilt several times, but the basic structure was retained. After 1990 the cube was finally empty.

Since the end of 2014 the dairy farm has belonged to the “Milk Farm Arnstadt GmbH” monument. Despite severe water and vandalism damage , the basic structure of the building was preserved. The preparatory work for the renovation of the listed building has been carried out by the GmbH since 2015. An event center with a gallery is to be built, which will be part of the “Grand Tour of Modernism” as part of the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus in 2019; "The Grand Tour of Modernism combines the mediation of architecture with the sensual experience of traveling and the joy of literally understanding past and present." ( Press release : Bauhaus Cooperation Berlin Dessau Weimar gGmbH ).
