The Eitorfer landmark

The old tower in Eitorf was destroyed in a bomb attack in 1945. It was the emblem of Eitorf and is shown in the coat of arms.

history

The old tower was the remaining tower of the old church built around 1170 and demolished in 1889 on today's market square. It was over 21 meters high and eight meters on a side. After the old church was demolished, it remained standing for financial reasons, initially as a bell tower for the new church under construction and later as a landmark. In 1913, a memorial was inaugurated in the walled-in passage to the demolished nave for those who died in the town.

On March 17, 1945, the tower was hit by an aerial bomb and collapsed. Here he buried 25 people who had sought protection in him, including a Spaniard and three French.

memory

The outlines of the foundation are today as colored pavement together with a memorial plaque in memory of the old tower. In addition, Turmgasse leads to the market square.
