description

Due to ever increasing life expectancies as a result of demographic development , it is observed that older people are mobile longer. Every year in Germany alone, around 700,000 people suffer, for example, broken arms or vertebrae.

The increasing life expectancy results in an increasing tendency for injuries to the musculoskeletal system in old age. The changing living conditions of people in the western industrialized countries mean that people in old age do more sports, such as skiing, cycling or hiking. This is accompanied by an increasing number of accidental injuries, the treatment of which must be adapted to the age of the patient.

Injuries such as fractures or burns in old age place different demands on medical treatment than is the case with patients at a younger age. The growing number of elderly patients to be treated requires the attending physician to pay particular attention to, for example, the interaction with agents that lower or increase blood pressure. Changes in bone density in old age mean that bones break faster, for example as a result of a fall. The change in bone density in old age also places special demands on any implants that may be required and on the subsequent restoration.

Anticoagulant medication and other parallel medical treatments often require coordinated appointments with other departments. Side diseases increase the risk of complications.

Often already inserted implants or existing prostheses in the case of (new) fractures pose particular challenges for the treating surgeon , as does any existing dementia .
