Old Village (Hildesheim)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Altes Dorf was the name of the oldest settlement in the area of today's city and most likely the original bearer of the name Hildesheim . The later founded city took over the name.

The old village was probably in the area where the northernmost track of Hildesheim Central Station runs today .

Its first documentary mention as "Aldendorp" dates from 1135. Around 1224 the place was probably still inhabited, in the 14th and 15th centuries the site was deserted or used for gardens. At the end of the 13th century, on the village square near the Butterborn spring , an episcopal Vogt also held court for the surrounding villages. In the 14th century, the Hildesheim bishops still had considerable property in the corridor of this village. During the Thirty Years War in November 1625, the area was flooded by plugging the Schlumpquelle as a defensive measure .

The street of the same name, which runs parallel to the tracks behind the main station, is reminiscent of the old village . However, in 1894 it was moved a little to the north to make room for the extension of the main station by a fourth track.
