Old Town Hall

The old town hall is a building in the city of Brașov ( German: Kronstadt ) in Transylvania in Romania . The building was the seat of the city council for more than 500 years.

history

After a furrier's arbor was added to the medieval tower in the 14th century , the council chamber was built above the arbor in 1420. Several modernizations followed. In 1515 the tower was raised and provided with a tail hood with five golden spheres, and a dungeon and a city archive were also housed. Eight years later, the master hour maker Georgius from Schäßburg installed a tower clock on the top floor.

In 1646 the Hundertmannstube was built, in which the 100 members of the external council could meet. Like the Black Church , the old town hall was also badly damaged by the great fire in 1689. Due to the poor financial situation, the old town hall could only be repaired slightly.

Between 1770 and 1778 it was largely given its present shape, as well as an onion dome . After the magistrate had moved into the new building on Purzengasse in 1876, the city council's meeting room, shops, the archive and a fireworks depot remained in the old town hall. In 1910 the onion dome gave way to today's tower tower. In 1949 the regional museum moved to the old town hall.
