Old Town Hall of Dalkeith

The old town hall of Dalkeith is the former council building of the Scottish burgh Dalkeith in the Council Area Midlothian . In 1972 the structure was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A. Furthermore, together with various surrounding buildings, it forms a category B monument ensemble. Until 2001, the building was also classified as a Scheduled Monument .

history

In 1540 Dalkeith received the rights of a Burgh of Barony . As a result, a building had to be found for the new administrative tasks. In the 1640s a new building was finally decided and today's old town hall was built in 1648. Architectural details indicate a revision in the course of the 18th century. As was customary at the time, it also housed the prison until 1841. Probably the penultimate execution in Scotland was carried out in front of the building in 1827. After the Burgh Dalkeith was administered as Police Burgh from 1878 , the accommodation of the jurisdiction in the premises ended. The local scientific society and the Baptist Church later used the former town hall as a meeting place. In 1966 the building became the property of St Mary's Chapel and has been used as a community center ever since.
