Old Town Hall (Legnica)
The old town hall ( Polish Stary Ratusz ) of the Lower Silesian city Legnica ( German Liegnitz ) is located on the Ring.
history
prehistory
The city of Liegnitz received in 1318 by Boleslaus III. for the first time the right to build a town hall. The first town hall was built around 1379. This building burned down in 1428 and was rebuilt in 1468. This Gothic building consisted of two wings with a stepped gable. The building was demolished in 1737.
Today's construction
Today's town hall was built according to a design by the architect Franz M. Scheerhofer the Younger in baroque style between 1737 and 1741. The first meeting of the city council took place on May 15, 1741 in the new building.
The New Town Hall was built between 1902 and 1905 not far from the baroque building . The last meeting in the now old town hall was held on April 8, 1905.
In the original plans it was planned to place a tower dome on the protruding risalit. However, this could not be built directly due to financial bottlenecks. It was only between 1928 and 1929 that the town hall received a tower dome in the baroque style.
During the Second World War, the old town hall remained almost undamaged. It was used by the Soviet Union between 1945 and 1965 . After the building was returned to the city, the building was renovated. Today the building is used by a theater. There is a restaurant in the basement.
architecture
The old town hall was built in the baroque style and shows influences from the Austro-Bohemian school. At the front there is a protruding risalit and two side stairs. These are decorated with stone lanterns.
The old town hall has a mansard roof with lucans and a tower dome in the baroque style.
