history

Moritz von Hutten's coat of arms stone with a Bible verse on his grain box

The former prince-bishop's tithe store was built under Bishop Moritz von Hutten according to plans by the episcopal master builder Erhard Reich in the years after 1545 and is therefore also known as the Huttenstadel . In the course of history, the four-storey steep-gable construction with dormers, slotted windows with sloping walls, six round-arched elevator windows on the north gable and a protruding polygonal stair tower in the middle of the western long side has undergone various changes, some of which brought about considerable changes in the original building structure. In 1880, General Ulrich converted the house into a classicist residential building for high military personnel. In 1938 the house was rebuilt and used as a city theater, later as a cinema . The volunteer fire brigade also found space in the south area with two gate entrances.

Todays use

When the neighboring monuments in the area of Residenzplatz were renovated as part of urban renewal in the 1980s, the city renovated its own listed building and put it into contemporary use. The building was completely rebuilt and expanded from 1985 after archaeological investigation of parts of the ground and opened on June 10, 1988 with the name Altes Stadttheater Eichstätt (also called Asthe for short ) as the cultural, conference and social center of the city of Eichstätt. There is also a cinema in the building.

Others

In the northeast corner of the building, below the modern staircase leading to the hall, there is a stone coat of arms of the episcopal builder from Loy Hering's workshop . Below it is the Latin Bible verse: QVI ABSCONDIT FRVMENTA MALEDICETVR / IN POPVLIS, BENEDICTIO AVTEM SVPER CAPVT VENDENTIVM ("Whoever hides his grain be cursed / among the people, but blessings on the heads of those who sell it") ( Proverbs 11:26).
