Old stone house (Stuttgart)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The old stone house at Grabenstrasse 11 in Stuttgart was a well-fortified residential building and, next to the stud house, one of the oldest secular buildings in the city. It probably dates from the time of the siege of Stuttgart by Rudolf von Habsburg (1286); it was first mentioned in a document in 1393.

The house was added to the city wall around 1440 with extensions. This was permitted against the payment of 30 kreuzer interest annually to the city on St. Gallus Day .

The house with its unusually thick, massive stone walls (up to one and a half meters) was repaired in 1935 and restored in 1936. The facade was exposed with early Gothic windows and a stepped gable.

The building suffered severe damage from bombs and a subsequent fire in 1944, which the meter-thick walls withstood. Originally, the idea was to set up a wine tavern and exhibition rooms on the upper floors in the building, which is unique in Stuttgart, after the reconstruction. Despite the wishes of numerous local friends, the historic building was not restored. It was demolished in the second half of 1953 under protest in order to create parking spaces. As a small concession to the history-conscious, the portal and an early Gothic window were moved to the park of the municipal lapidarium on Mörikestrasse. Grabenstrasse and its original course were not taken into account when Stuttgart was rebuilt and can no longer be seen today. It ran as an extension of Sporerstrasse a little southwest of Stiftstrasse. The old stone house would now stand between Schulstrasse and Stiftstrasse.
