Amatori Catania Rugby is an Italian rugby union club from Catania . Its first team, the only professional Sicily , played in the top Italian Super 10 league until 2008 . The club currently plays in Serie A. The home games are played in the Stadio Santa Maria Goretti .
history
The association was founded in 1963. The first team initially played in Serie C and rose to Serie B in 1965. 1969/70 Amatori Catania belonged to Serie A during one season. In 1973 they were promoted back to Serie A. The team played in Serie A2 in 1988/89, then back to Serie A until 1997. In 1999 they were relegated to Serie B, and in 2003 they were promoted to Serie A. As one of ten best teams in the country Amatori Catania belongs to the new professional league Super 10 since 2004. In 2005 the team reached the semi-finals of the championship, but was eliminated against Treviso .
Amatori Catania may never have become Italian champions, but in recent years they have qualified for European cup competitions. In 2004/05 and 2005/06 the team was represented in the European Challenge Cup . In 2008 the club rose after only two wins from 18 games and more than 20 points behind in Serie A.
