history

William M. Young
John L. Moon

In 1896, William M. Young and John L. Moon joined forces in Milwaukee to produce reliable reviews for their customers. They were inspired by an insured event in which a farmer had problems determining the value of a grain silo that had been destroyed by fire. American Appraisal's first customer was the Schlitz Brewing Company of Milwaukee.

In 1910, American Appraisal became the largest company of its kind, employing 200 people performing evaluations across the United States and Canada.

1920 and the following decade was marked by the industrial expansion of American companies, financed by an unprecedented plethora of stocks and bonds . The accompanying demand for independent company valuations led to the opening of the 20th office in the USA in 1924. London and Berlin followed at this time. American Appraisal also carried out the first intangible evaluations, such as evaluating company names, during this period. At the end of World War II, the US government hired American Appraisal to take stock, assess and advise on disposals of excess inventory in Europe, Asia and the Pacific.

The 1950s and 1960s were marked by the takeover of other consulting firms and the establishment of further national branches.

American Appraisal went public in June 1971 and was listed on the Nasdaq as part of raising capital for extensive acquisitions to diversify the company . After a management buy-out in 1994, American Appraisal is again run by employees.

American Appraisal has been a member of committees that have supported the US Securities and Exchange Commission ( SEC ) in valuation matters since 2000 .
