American Council of Learned Societies

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) was founded in 1919 to represent the United States within the Union Académique Internationale (International Union of Academies). The founding members of the ACLS were representatives of thirteen scientific associations who believed that a merger of these scientific organizations at the end of World War I would best represent the democratic ethos and intellectual aspirations of the United States.

The statutes of the ACLS designate “the promotion of humanistic research in all areas of the humanities and social sciences ” as the main task of the ACLS. In 1926, the ACLs awarded scholarships worth $ 4,500, and by 2012 that amount had grown to more than $ 15 million.

The seat is in New York City .
