The American Dog Breeders Association is an association of American Pit Bull Terrier breeders in the United States .

It was founded in September 1909 by Guy McCord and Con Feeley, two breeders of the American Pit Bull Terrier. After initially only members could register their dogs there, they gradually opened their register to non-members who bred this breed. Their goal was the registration of dogs as well as the degradation of the image of a breed exclusively bred for dog fighting . Another founder was the dog breeder John P. Colby. In 1951 his widow Florence Colby took over the ADBA with her second husband Frank Ferris and continued to run it with the purpose of registering dogs of this breed. In 1976 she developed a breeding standard for dog shows . Since 2006, purebred dogs of other breeds can also be registered with the ADBA.

The ADBA has published a newspaper, the  American Pit Bull Terrier Gazette , since 1976 and has been providing $ 1000 scholarships to students with experience of the breed since 1999. She organizes dog shows and competitions in pulling weights.

The breed standard of the ADBA serves as the basis for the definition of a dog of the type Pit Bull Terrier in the British Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 , this was confirmed by a court ruling in 1993, according to which an extensive similarity with this breed standard for such a classification with the consequence of a compulsory muzzle for the affected dog is sufficient. The ADBA added a disclaimer to their breed standard after the court ruling , according to which this standard is not intended to identify the breed of dog.
