American Girl is a line of 18 inch (45 cm) dolls launched by the Pleasant Company in 1986. The dolls are available in different designs with several ethnicities and they are designed in an age pattern between nine and eleven. They are sold with a matching companion book that tells the girl's individual story. Originally, the stories were based on different sections of American history , but in 1995 they were supplemented by characters and stories from contemporary life. A selection of matching clothing and accessories can also be purchased.

The manufacturer Pleasant Company was founded in 1986 by Pleasant Rowland and its products could initially only be ordered by post. In 1998, Pleasant Company was bought by Mattel . Pleasant Company has received the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Award eight times.
