The American Jewish Congress was founded in December 1918 by Zionists and Jewish immigration organizations. The background to the foundation was the desire to be able to represent one's own interests in the Versailles peace negotiations . The AJC gained particular influence under Rabbi Stephen Samuel Wise .
Soon after it was founded, there was a thematic overlap with the Zionist Organization of America . The problem was solved by dividing the processed subject areas.
The organization is not to be confused with the American Jewish Committee or the American Jewish Council .
