American Journal of Mathematics

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The American Journal of Mathematics (Am. J. Math.) Is an American mathematics journal that has been published since 1878. It is published every two months by the Johns Hopkins University Press.

Founder and publisher until 1884 was James Joseph Sylvester . Then Simon Newcomb was editor, assisted by Thomas Craig (1855-1900), who was also Sylvester and Newcomb Professor at Johns Hopkins University .

It is the oldest continuously published mathematics journal in the United States today. The Annals of Mathematics emerged from the then already existing journal The Analyst (published 1874 to 1883) in 1884 , so it has not appeared continuously until today.

Over the years, the editorial board included Oscar Zariski , Lars Ahlfors , Hermann Weyl , Wei-Liang Chow , SS Chern , André Weil , Harish-Chandra , Jean Dieudonné , Henri Cartan , Stephen Smale , Jun-Ichi Igusa , Joseph Shalika and William P. Minicozzi II . Christopher D. Sogge is currently (2016) the editor.

The ISSN is 0002-9327.

  1. There was a mathematics journal with the same name in the USA before, but it was less than a year in existence. They were edited by Robert Adrain of Columbia University in 1808 and 1814. From 1825 to 1833 Adrain published the Mathematical Diary.
