William P. Minicozzi II (born December 13, 1967 in Bryn Mawr , Pennsylvania ) is an American mathematician who mainly deals with minimal surfaces .

Life

Minicozzi studied at Princeton University ( Bachelor's degree in 1990) and received his doctorate in 1994 from Richard Schoen at Stanford University ( Geometrical variational problems related to symplectic geometry ). He then did a post-doc at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University . From 1995 he was at Johns Hopkins University , where he became Assistant Professor in 1994 , Associate Professor in 1998 and Professor in 2000. He was J.-J.-Sylvester-Professor for Mathematics there since 2002 and Krieger-Eisenhower Professor from 2007. In 2012 he moved to MIT, where he is the Singer Professor of Mathematics .

Minicozzi deals with differential geometry , geometric analysis and partial differential equations . In a series of works with Tobias Colding , he developed a theory of 3-dimensional manifolds of embedded minimal surfaces . They also proved a conjecture by Eugenio Calabi and Shing-Tung Yau for the special case of embedded surfaces. With Colding, he also dealt with Ricci flows and harmonic functions on manifolds , among other things .

In 1998 he was a Sloan Research Fellow . In 2010 he and Colding received the Oswald Veblen Prize for their work on minimal areas. In 2006 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Madrid ( Embedded minimal surfaces ). He has been editor of the Memoirs and Transactions of the AMS since 2007, of Geometriae dedicata since 2008 , of Analysis and PDE and the Journal of Topology and Analysis since 2007 . He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society . In 2015 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
