The American Society of Anesthesiologists (abbr .: ASA) is an American society for anesthesiology . It was founded in 1905 to promote the art and science of anesthesia as the Long Island Society of Anesthetists by 9 doctors, including Adolf F. Erdman as the initiator, at a meeting at Long Island College Hospital. In 1911 it expanded to 23 members as the New York Society of Anesthetists and in 1935 became the American Society of Anesthetists, Incorporated , which had 484 members in 1936. In 1945 it gave itself its current name.

Among other things, the ASA has developed a classification system ( ASA classification ) that makes it possible to assess the physical status of the individual patient based on their previous illnesses and general condition.
