American Tower is a US operator of wireless communication systems. The company is structured as a REIT and has more than 170,000 transmission systems for data transmission and communication in 17 countries worldwide, most of them transmission masts . American Tower leases these facilities to telecommunications service providers, radio and television broadcasters, government organizations, and other public institutions. The company was founded in 1995 as a unit of American Radio Systems and was spun off in 1998 after American Radio Systems was merged into CBS Corporation . Shortly after it was founded in 1995, the company began buying up old directional radio masts from AT&T and offered the transmission locations to mobile operators. In 2005, American Tower merged with SpectraSite Communications, making the company one of the largest broadcast tower operators in North America.

American Tower was one of the top 100 companies in the US S&P 500 stock index in 2018 .
