Hypothetical North American monetary union between Canada, Mexico and the USA

Amero (from America and Euro ) is a term used to denote the currency of a hypothetical North American currency union . It is based on the idea that the governments of Canada , the USA and Mexico were planning to establish a North American supranational organization ( North American Union ) with a common currency and extensive powers similar to the European Union , unnoticed by the public .

The existence of such plans is regularly and expressly denied in official statements. Nevertheless, the term Amero and the conspiracy theory on which it is based have received a certain amount of media coverage, most recently after WikiLeaks published a report by the American representation in Ottawa from 2005, in which further integration steps up to monetary union were discussed.
