Ami Popper

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ami Popper (* 1969 ) is an Israeli Kahanist and convicted murderer .

Popper, a dishonorable discharge from the Israeli army, put on the uniform of an Israeli army soldier on May 20, 1990 and asked several Arabs waiting for a bus to line up to check their IDs. After they lined up, he opened fire and murdered seven of them.

After this act, there were Palestinian riots in which Israeli security forces shot seven other Arabs, and 700 were injured. Israel Radio reported that Popper had claimed he was upset about lovesickness. He later told the police that he was raped by an Arab when he was 13 and that he had committed these acts out of shame and a desire for revenge.

Popper was charged and convicted of seven murders in March 1991. He became religious in prison and married a Canadian woman in June 1993 from a family of Kach followers . They had three children together.

In February 1999 the seven-time life sentence was converted to a 40-year sentence. As early as 2007, Popper was given the opportunity to temporarily leave prison in a relaxed prison system. On January 17, 2007, Popper was involved in a car accident which he caused by running over a solid line. His wife and one of his sons were killed. Popper was slightly injured. The Israeli police reported that his driver's license had expired in 1999. In December 2008, he married again. Right-wing and Orthodox politicians in Israel have called for his release in exchange for the release of Palestinians who have committed acts of violence against Israelis.
