Amerli (also Amirli ) ( Arabic امرلي) is an Iraqi city ​​in the Tuz Churmatu district in the Salah ad-Din governorate . It is located about 170 kilometers north of the city of Baghdad . Amerli has a population of 26,000 and is mostly inhabited by the Turkmen ethnic minority in Iraq . The majority of the Turkmens are Shiite . The city name Amirli ( Arabic امرلي) is a short form of " Ali my prince" ( Arabic اميري علي). With Ali the Shiite Imam Ali is meant.

On July 7, 2007, a devastating suicide attack took place here on a market square. 156 people died and 255 were injured. In 2014 there was the siege of Amerli : A military conflict between the terrorist organization Islamic State and the Turkmen Shiites Amerlis.
