The ammonia laboratory is a large, traditional laboratory in the central research department of BASF AG. The laboratory is located in Ludwigshafen am Rhein , one of the largest chemical sites in the world.

The laboratory was headed by Alwin Mittasch between 1912 and 1932. During this time the catalyst for ammonia synthesis was discovered . Then the laboratory was headed by Martin Müller-Cunradi. In 1940 the laboratory had over 1,300 employees. The traditional research focus of the ammonia laboratory is the development of high pressure processes , catalysis research and the development of catalytic processes.

In the ammonia laboratory, the development of integrated chemical processes for the large products of BASF is processed. Over 100 chemists and 1000 employees work on numerous research projects on a laboratory and pilot plant scale.
