Traffic light account

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The traffic light account is a further development of the classic working time account as a control element for flexible working hours . The traffic light account also functions like a savings book , in which working hours can be accumulated or withdrawn in the company. The plus and minus volume of the account is divided into three areas which, based on the logic of a traffic light , are designated as green, yellow and red areas.

Areas

The three areas of the traffic light account are defined as follows:

  • Green area : In the green area there is a slight deviation from the contractually agreed working hours. It is assumed that the employees in ownership , the increase or decrease in working to reverse. Intervention by the superior is not required.
  • Yellow area : The yellow area already shows a considerable accumulation of excess or under-work that cannot be easily compensated. For this phase, specific measures must therefore be taken, such as that further overtime may only be done with the approval of the supervisor or that the employees are obliged to agree on measures to reduce this in the team.
  • Red area : The red area indicates that it is already difficult to reduce the accumulated overtime in day-to-day business. In this case, the employee and the supervisor must agree on specific measures to return to the green area

advantages

The advantage of the traffic light account model lies in the built-in “attention thresholds” that can be linked to specific measures. In this way, significant deviations in the hourly account, up or down, can be identified in good time. With working time models that are predominantly controlled by employees, the traffic light account is often based on the logic of shared control responsibility. Smaller balances tend to be the responsibility of the employee, while the management of higher balances is primarily the responsibility of the manager . Limitations of the control concept arise, however, in particular if the employee, for example in knowledge-intensive fields of work, has a very pronounced temporal independence and the manager has fewer opportunities to exercise control including the associated directives.
