Amper, SA , based in Madrid, is a publicly traded provider of telecommunications equipment and services.

background

Amper was founded in 1956 by a communications engineer, Antonio Peral, and initially manufactured intercom systems. After just a few years, Amper was one of the leading Spanish manufacturers of telecommunications technology and became the main supplier of the Compañía Telefónica Nacional de España . In 1982, Amper was taken over by Telefónica. In the years before Spain entered the EU, Amper had a strategic position in the Spanish market and founded joint ventures with a number of international telecommunications companies, such as AT&T Network Systems (now Lucent Technologies) with Motorola Telcel and with Thomson CSF (now Thales ) Amper Programas de Electrónica y Comunicaciones for the production of tactical military communication systems.

It went public in 1986. With the deregulation of the telecommunications market, the company was forced to undergo a profound restructuring and henceforth focused on information and communication systems. Amper grew in the following years in Spain and internationally, particularly in the field of system integration services; in 2000 a stake in Medidata in Brazil was acquired. In 2006, Telcar and the Landata Group in the area of network and system integration were acquired.

In 2007 Knossos and Fedetec were bought: Knossos is mainly involved in the provision of mobility solutions, especially in public administration; Fedetec is active in the area of emergency call services. In 2010 a majority stake was acquired in the North American company eLandia. In October 2014, Amper sold its defense activities, consisting of a 51% stake in Amper Programas de Electrónica y Comunicaciones , to its partner Thales.

With bank liabilities of around € 164 million and negative equity, the company had to file for preliminary bankruptcy on December 15, 2014 ( preconcurso under Spanish law). The preliminary bankruptcy phase was ended in September 2015 after the company had carried out a successful capital increase and debt restructuring.
