Amsterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Dutch shipyard Amsterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij NV (ADM) in Amsterdam existed from 1877 to 1985. The focus of the shipyard's work was on the repair and conversion sector, but from 1950 to 1965 new buildings were also built. Another important field of work was ship engineering.

history

Foundation and growth

The company was founded on September 4, 1877 at the instigation of the shipping company Stoomvaart Maatschappij "Nederland" as a pure repair yard and began operating its first floating dock (Koninginnedok / Dok 2, 4000 tons deadweight) the following year on a site on the north bank of the IJ. In 1884, the ADM expanded to include a nearby shipyard including its floating dock (Koningsdok / Dok 1, 3000 tons load capacity). The opening of the middle lock of the North Sea Canalin IJmuiden in 1896 the size of the ships calling at Amsterdam skyrocketed and marked the beginning of a rapid economic boom for the Amsterdam shipyard. In a short time, the shipyard puts further docks into service, in 1899 the Wilhelminadok / Dok 3 with a load capacity of 7,500 tons and in 1911 the Julianadok / Dok 4 with a load capacity of 12,000 tons. The latter is enlarged in the year after its commissioning, whereupon its load capacity increases to 16,500 tons (sold in 1938). In 1924 the significantly larger Hendrikdok / Dok 5 with a load capacity of 25,000 tons was added. In 1938 the Julianadok was sold, after which the Hendrikdok / Dok 5 was continued as Dok 4. It is also the Hendrikdok that was sunk by a German demolition squad on September 22, 1944 with the still docked Italian ship XXIV Maggio . After the end of the war, the dock was lifted and used again.

After the reconstruction work in the first post-war years, ADM also built new ships from 1950. Since the shipyard did not have its own slipways, the ships were assembled in the Koninginnedok from prefabricated sections and later undocked. Ten years later, ADM acquired 42 hectares of land in the western port area, on which it built a second branch. At the old location "Werf Noord" in Amsterdam North, the shipyard had no expansion options. The "Werf Westhaven", which was put into operation in 1965, had a large warehouse, an office building and a pier to which the Dok 5, which was built in the north, was moored. In this dock the ADM finished the shipbuilding and turned back to her specialty, the ship repair.

Ship engineering made up around half of the total workforce for years. The field of work included the repair and, especially in the post-war years, the construction of new steam boilers and steam engines , diesel engines and gas generators , with known manufacturers working under license. The ADM machine factory even built printing machines .

In the course of the economic downturn, the ADM merged with the Nederlandsche Dok en Scheepsbouw Maatschappij (NDSM) in 1978 . The actual ADM was dissolved, the repair area of both companies was merged in the new Amsterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij BV and the new shipbuilding was concentrated in the Nederlandsche Scheepsbouw Maatschappij (NSM). In May 1984 this NSM also went bankrupt.

After bankruptcy

A residential area was later created on the former site of the "Werf Noord". The "Werf Westhaven" was initially occupied by squatters from 1987 to 1992, cleared and occupied again in 1997 after being sold to Amstellimo BV and Chidda Vastgoed BV, two development companies of the entrepreneur Bertus Lüske. An alternative artists' village had settled on the site, which among other things organized the experimental ROBODOCK festival. The municipality of Amsterdam now wants to use the site to expand the port.
