LVR Institute for Regional Studies and Regional History

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The LVR Institute for Regional Studies and Regional History (formerly the Office for Regional Studies in the Rhineland ) is the competence center of the Rhineland Regional Association for historical and current scientific issues in the areas of history, language, folklore and everyday culture in the Rhineland. Continuous basic research and ongoing scientific documentation form the basis of the work. The public is regularly informed about the results of the research through books, films, atlases, lectures, conferences, discussions and exhibitions. It has its seat at Endenicher Strasse 133 in Bonn . The director is currently (2019) the folklorist Dagmar Hänel.

structure

The work areas are divided into five areas of competence.

language

The documentation and research of the ILR language department deals with old local dialects, remnants of secret languages, regional lects such as Ruhr German or Rhenish German. An extensive sound archive with voice recordings of everyday speaking situations is the basis of diverse research projects such as investigations into the remains of former Red Welsch dialects or the Rhenish dialect islands.

history

The Department of Urban and Regional History researches and documents the history of the cities in the region and presents it in the Rhenish City Atlas. The department then conducts regional historical research. The Rhineland has been one of the most important urban landscapes in Europe since the Middle Ages.

Folklore

In the Folklore Department, everyday culture in the Rhineland is researched in the past and present. This includes the topics of food and drink, work and leisure, clothing and living, communication, rituals, ideals, norms and values. The focus of this work is the person in his concrete everyday relationships as an expert for his life and for his concept of regional culture.

Jewish Life Project

The synagogue , built in Rödingen in 1841 , together with the house of the Jewish Ullmann family, is the only ensemble of buildings of this type in the western Rhineland that has largely been preserved in its original state. There is a permanent exhibition on various facets of Jewish life in the Rhineland in the past and present. The LVR-Kulturhaus Landsynagoge Rödingen sees itself as an open offer for everyone interested in this topic.

Project life in the village

The long-term project Life in the Village , started in 2010, aims to monitor and analyze developments in selected villages in the Rhineland. The project started in Hünxe on the Lower Rhine . It is particularly concerned with ethnological and linguistic issues that arise from changes in terms such as globalization or modernization . Two questions are:

  1. How do people design and manage their everyday life in rural areas?
  2. How are village and community represented in language, symbols and rituals?

Cooperation with the University of Bonn

On August 30, 2013, an agreement was made between the Rhineland Regional Council and the University of Bonn for the continuation of the subject of cultural anthropology / folklore at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Bonn. With the new course, the traditional folklore at the University of Bonn was given a new basis with the aim of examining cultural processes and structures from the Rhineland from a comparative and historical perspective. The course thus ties in with Bonn research traditions, such as the Atlas of German Folklore , which was created here in the last century. The course also links European-oriented cultural anthropology / folklore with non-European ethnology (America and Asia) and historical perspectives with current problems.
