Office for the legal protection of assets of the GDR
The Office for the Legal Protection of Property of the GDR (AfR) was an organ of the Council of Ministers of the German Democratic Republic .
tasks
The AfR was founded on the basis of a Council of Ministers decision on August 18, 1966. It was responsible for settling open property issues. His tasks included securing the property rights of the GDR outside of its territory as well as controlling the state-administered property of beneficiaries from the Federal Republic of Germany including West Berlin as well as from other states.
The predecessor of the office was the Central Office for the Protection of Public Property at the Council of Ministers of the GDR, which was headed by Hermann Kleyer from 1964 .

The AfR was handled by the then Federal Office for the Regulation of Open Property Issues (BARoV) (later: Federal Office for Central Services and Unresolved Property Issues - BADV), which also manages the AfR archive.
