Amy Bailey (suffragette)

Amy Beckford Bailey , OJ , ( 1895 - October 3, 1990 ) was a Jamaican teacher and suffragette .

Life

Bailey was the co-founder and first chairman of the Jamaican Women's Liberal Club, which campaigned to give women a proper place in society and family. After a stay in England, she identified the high birth rate as a cause of problems for women in Jamaica and founded the first association in 1938 to teach Jamaican women about methods of conception control . Bailey opened the Housecraft Training Center in Kingston in January 1946 to promote young women and girls. In addition, she worked for other educational and charitable organizations and worked as a justice of the peace . Bailey always believed that women should acquire better qualifications in order to counteract oppression based on their gender.

In 1988 she received the Marcus Garvey Award for Excellence, and in 1990 she was awarded the Order of Jamaica for her services to the women's movement .
